Plot

In a library there is a young scientist named Alexander, he is a mathematician from Great Britain. His daily life is creating mathematical formulas. Alex is obsessed with math and science. One day he had to go to meet his lover in the park. Reminded by David, Alex went to the flower shop to buy flowers. Before he could buy flowers, Alex was curious about the steam-powered car in front of the flower shop. Because at that time very few steam cars in his day. Suddenly the car started running and Alex swiftly pulled the brake lever. Because of that incident, Alex even forgot to buy flowers.

Alex immediately went to meet his girlfriend, Ema. Alex confesses his feelings to Ema and invites Ema to live together forever. Suddenly in front of them, came the figure of a thief who wanted to take valuables from Alex while threatening with a gun. But because Alex doesn't want to give his ring to the thief, Alex and the thief fight and the gun the thief is holding shoots Ema. Instantly Emma died. Alex is very sad and sorry for that.

A few months after the incident, Alex was in his study working on a mathematical formula on a super-wide blackboard. Then came David who reminded that Alex had forgotten the people around him. David also said that everything had happened, and it wasn't Alex's fault that Ema died. Instead of realizing, Alex actually blamed everything. David said that we cannot change what has already happened (destiny). Stubbornly, Alex said that he would change destiny. Disgusted, David left Alex.

It turns out that all this time Alex has been making a time machine to go to the time before Ema died. Alex also tries to change destiny, but still Ema dies even though in a different way. Alex returns to the present and is sad about it. David also calmed Alex so he wouldn't be sad.

Alex also went to the time machine again and headed to the future, then he went to a museum/library to find out why destiny can't be changed. Unsatisfied with the answer, Alex went into the more distant future. He arrived at a time when the earth was in chaos, the moon was being destroyed and the ruins fell to the earth. Alex also went to a time machine, but due to an explosion Alex fainted and the time machine took Alex to a very distant future, namely 802,701 AD.

Alex also wakes up in a house, it turns out that he has been helped by the Eloi tribe, a tribe that lived in 802,701 AD. In this era there is no longer English so that Alex finds it difficult to communicate, but there is one person from the Eloi tribe who can speak English, a girl named Marla.

When Alex sleeps, he has a bad dream of being chased by someone and when he wakes up he says the word Morlock. It turned out that this dream was also experienced by the residents of the Eloi tribe. When Alex was returning from going to the ruins of the former library building, suddenly a trumpet sounded and the Morlocks came who were hunting for the Eloi tribe. Marla was caught by Morlock. Alex also goes to the ruins of the museum and looks for where the Morlock tribe is located to save Marla. Alex also goes to where the Morlock tribe is located, which is underground.

When Alex is at the place of the Morlock tribe, Alex is caught by Morlock and brought to the place of the Morlock leader. There Alex saw Marla being locked up. The Morlock leader said they wouldn't be like that if the moon hadn't broken. The incident made some of the remaining humans have to take shelter underground and continue to evolve by breeding. But those living below will be preyed upon and controlled. The Morlock tribe is also very behind with the villagers (the Eloi tribe). The Morlock leader explains that the villagers are part of the Morlock food chain. The Morlock leader can control the minds of the Morlocks so as not to consume the Eloi tribe, with which the Eloi tribe can breed and give birth to new food candidates.

The Morlock leader tells Alex to go home using the time machine. But Alex wants the Morlock leader to return the watch and a fight breaks out in the time machine. Alex also kicks the Morlock Leader out and starts the time machine to go to the future. The Morlock leader slowly became a skeleton and died. Alex again uses the time machine to save Marla and destroys the time machine so that the explosion can destroy the Morlock tribe.

Alex finally settled in the village of the Eloi tribe. Alex and Marla fell in love with each other and ended up living together.

Reader's opinion

A few excerpts from the novel Time Machine, a science fiction reading. As you know, what is discussed in the work in the form of science fiction is about someone's speculative view of knowledge and technology that is relevant to the life of a society or individual at a time.

In my opinion, as a novel reader who is still a beginner, this book is quite light to read because the vocabulary is not too complicated and can still be understood in one reading. When reading the next chapter, the story becomes more interesting and makes you curious to know the continuation of the story. The depiction of the plot and the atmosphere is very strong and can make the reader's imagination run wild.

This novel was adapted into a film called “The Time Machine” in 2002. The film was directed by Simon Wells and Gore Verbinski. This novel was written at the end of the 19th century, to be precise in 1895. Maybe I was too late to read this book because it was almost a century ago that this book was published and only yesterday I finished reading it, it's really ironic, but it would be nice if it wasn't too late to learn . Wells's critique was very standard, he pointed to the social conditions of British society at that time which was intensively creating the Industrial Revolution. What impact did the Industrial Revolution have? There are many positive impacts but there are also negative things caused by this big event. Starting from the emergence of the urbanization phenomenon, the gap between the social classes of entrepreneurs and workers, to what Wells most wanted to be appointed, namely low labor wages, one-sided justice, overlapping, and unequal, a capitalist economic system that is very detrimental to the lower class people. , and with this work Wells describes it very well.

The stories and social criticisms conveyed by Wells can still be felt today. When industrial workers have mushroomed in our country and the gaps between employers, the government, and workers are very sharp, for example in determining the minimum wage for workers, it seems as if the government has always sided with employers and ignored the rights of workers, low wages, little job insurance. and much more. Although our country is not an adherent of capitalist economics, but the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer very often happens. Indeed, the progress of a country can be seen from how the economy and the income per capita of its people are, but the enjoyment is only felt by a few people.
